I've always had horses in my life. I can remember being ponied behind my mom's horse on my Shetland, Bob. That was before I started first grade. Later, I rode hunters and jumpers. Equitation was my favorite class. In 1977, I won the ASPCA National Henry Bergh for Juniors Championship. After graduate school, I quit riding, but was still involved with the family farm. My parents were raising Thoroughbreds for the track and hunter show ponies.
My mother started driving with Blanchard Poole in the early 2000's. One day in 2009, she talked me into taking her training level pony out with Blanchard for "just a walk in the woods". Within a few months, I was asking if I could compete. Since then, I have competed in Training through Intermediate levels with a variety of ponies. I've had some great coaching along the way from Blanchard, Nancy Tomlinson, and now, Janelle Marshall. I've also made many great friends in the driving world.
I got my current driving pony, Ragtime Up In Smoke, from Phyl Wenkstern. He is a dun registered Morgan. I have thoroughly enjoyed driving him. In April of this year, we won the USEF National Preliminary Single Pony Championship at the Katydid CDE in Tryon, and the ADS North American Preliminary Single Pony Reserve Championship at the Southern Pines CDE.
In 2020, after teaching for 28 years, I retired. I live in a 150 year old house in the small, Lowcountry town of Ridgeville .My father still lives on the family farm about two miles away.
